When putting together a skincare routine, it’s important to know which skincare ingredients to avoid mixing. There are many common ingredients in products that aid in specific results. And while some ingredients can work to aid you in your results, others can work against you. Make sure to look out for these the next time you put together a skincare routine.
Skincare Ingredient: Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a great skincare ingredient because of its ability to brighten skin. It’s also amazing at fading dark spots. It’s great to have on your side if you suffer from hyperpigmentation.
But avoid mixing it with AHA & Retinol. AHA is a skincare acid. Mixing AHA + vitamin C could cause your skin to become irritated. It’s better to use your AHA for your night routine and vitamin C during the morning to avoid this. The same goes for your retinol. Keep these ingredients separate by your morning and night routines.
Also, don’t mix vitamin C with niacinamide directly.
There’s nothing wrong with having both in your routine. But reserve one for your daytime routine and the other for the evening.
Skincare Ingredient: Retinol
Retinol is a powerful skincare ingredient that can be used to fight acne and signs of aging. If you use this in your skincare routine, avoid pairing it with AHA + BHA. She’s a diva that doesn’t play nice with others.
These in combination can be too much for your skin, causing it to dry out and become irritated. If you’re trying to fight acne, consider pairing retinol with niacinamide instead of your usual acne-fighting skincare acids.
Skincare Ingredient: Benzoyl Peroxide
For our oily, breakout prone friends, you may be quite familiar with benzoyl peroxide. It’s used to control oil by drying out your skin. Most acne treatments in general work to dry skin.
If you use this ingredient as part of your routine, make sure to avoid mixing it with retinol. The benzoyl peroxide can make the retinol ineffective.
If you want to benefits of both, you can save your benzoyl peroxide for your morning routine. Save the retinol for night.
