How Do Pimple Patches Work?
A pimple patch is also known as a hydrocolloid patch. If that sounds familiar, it’s because you’ve more than likely seen them in the bandage aisle. Before the rise of their popular use in skincare, hydrocolloid patches were used in blister care.
These patches work because of the hydrocolloid gel they contain. This squishy material works by providing a clean, safe, sterile environment for your pimple to heal. What I love is that they make your pimples a bit more discrete. They’re slightly opaque and depending on how bad your breakout is, makes them less noticeable.
Not only do they work as a bandage for your pimple, they absorb excess oil and dirt.
When you remove the patch and notice that it’s white, that’s not pus. It’s all the extra liquid surrounding your pimple.
Are Pimple Patches Safe For My Skin?
Yes! Pimple patches are good for all skin types. But, if you’re super sensitive, you may want to avoid them if you’re known to have allergies to adhesives. The adhesive isn’t strong like a normal bandage, but it’s enough so that it will stay in place.
The other thing to keep an eye out for is that your patches may contain extra ingredients that are good for fighting pimples.
You may find some that have salicylic acid a known BHA to help break down excess oil causing your pimple.
There’s some with tea tree oil that can cause your pimple to dry out so that it can heal faster.
And if that sounds less than ideal for you skin type, some have hyaluronic acid. That way your skin doesn’t lose hydration, but still heals effectively.
So long as you’re not allergic to any of the above, you’re golden!
How Effective Are Pimple Patches?
It sounds redundant but pimple patches work on pimples and lesions. When it comes to comedones, not so much.
This is because comedones are solid build up of oil, dirt, and bacteria that has already clogged a pore. Pimple patches work on active breakouts.
I find pimple patches to be pretty effective. I’ve put them on as soon as I felt a pimple forming and it cut down the heal time to a couple days.
And if you’ve already popped that pimple, you can still apply a patch. I’ve noticed that even doing this cut back on any hyperpigmentation that could be caused from picking at my skin. (Seriously, don’t pick at your skin.)
When you put them on, it’s best to leave them on for at least six hours. It’s best to do this overnight if you’re trying to be discrete. But if you like the fun, patterned pimple patches, rock it out! But commit to having it on for at a minimum of six hours.
The maximum is about five days.
