CBD in skincare seems like one of those ‘why not’ trends. After all, this is one of those ingredients that’s popped up in recent years in just about everything. And now it’s found its way to the skincare market.
Is it some new holy grail ingredient that you should add to your routine? Or should you stick to what you already know?
It’s always exciting to find new products, but it’s worth examining where they come from, what they do, and if the cost is worth the potential benefit.
Let’s dive into the CBD world and see what CBD in skincare is all about.
What is CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is an active ingredient that comes from the hemp plant. No, it won’t get you high. People have boasted claims of its effects on everything from pain, aging, anxiety, and menstrual cramps.
What Does CBD in Skincare Do?
When it comes to CBD, it seems like the people that would potentially benefit most are those with sensitive and dry skin.
CBD in skincare claims to calm rosacea, soothe eczema, and regulate hormones and oil production.
HOWEVER!
While, yes, CBD has made strides when it comes to conditions like seizures, this is the strongest, most conclusive evidence that we have of CBD working so far.
There’s moderate evidence when it comes to sleep disorders and pain disorders like fibromyalgia.
Looking at the evidence presented, other claims appear dubious at best.
This isn’t to say that CBD can’t have some effect on skin-related conditions. But there’s not enough conclusive evidence in comparison to everything else.
The studies that have been done with CBD in skincare have had a small sample size, but seem to have positive results. Especially for those with anti-inflammatory conditions.
CBD in the Beauty Industry
When it comes to cannabis in the beauty industry, keep in mind that CBD is still unregulated.
Meaning that even if it’s printed on the label, it may contain less CBD oil than advertised. Or it may contain ingredients that it’s not mentioned on the label at all like THC.
Plus, it’s hard to say if some skincare products would work just as well on their own without the addition of CBD.
All this to say that we’re still in Wild West territory when it comes to CBD and skin care. If CBD does what it claims to do, that would be wonderful.
But for now, I need to see more trials and evidence before strongly recommending this one.
The CBD Skincare Takeaway
CBD in skincare is one of those things that’s still so new to the market. There haven’t been enough studies done for me to recommend this to you. That’s not to say I never will. But everything surrounding CBD as it relates to skincare right now is hearsay.
Try it if you’d like. But there are so many amazing products on the market right now that will work fine for your skin type. CBD or not.
